Checking In

Yes, we're still alive and actually a little happier now that it seems like we'll have some football this year outside of the NCAA.  Let's catch up on a few things we missed over the last few weeks.

NBA:

Everyone seems to be wanting/planning on going overseas if the NBA lockout takes a while.  I'm not sure how I view this one because you have people like Stephen A. who says that it's selfish for guys to do this when they are supposed to be a group supporting each other, and then you get stories like the one on Deron Williams where he articulates that he spoke with the NBAPA and they basically said that they are on board with his decision.  Now you got rumors of Ron Artest playing in Britain, Nicolas Batum playing in France, Malik Hairston going to Italy, Kobe putting together an All-Star team for a trip through China, Tony Parker going to play for ASVEL (France), David Lighty and DaJuan Summers both going to Italy, Will Bynum going back to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and even guys like Matt Janning going to Fastweb Casale (Italy).

Of course with the NBA, you got silliness with of all people, and no one was surprised, that Michael Beasley was ticketed for the Mary Jane.  Please forgive me as I fake the surprise face. Beasley has all the talent in the world, but they just drafted a kid that can do what you do and you are going to show up in the national headlines for this?  (Getting on my soapbox) If you are a professional talent and need someone to mentor you or provide some real life experience on your journey, please, please please, drop me an email.  We can work out the money (I do have kids I need to put through college, but they're young), I can guarantee that it'll definitely be worth it.  My job will be to keep you out of the papers and doing stupid stuff like 'The Decision'.  Call me.

LeBron is coming back to Ohio, well kind of.  LeBron, or his image will be coming back to Ohio.  The LeBron Brand will outfit the Ohio State Buckeyes, Kentucky Wildcats, and the University of Miami Hurricanes for the upcoming season.

We need basketball back just so we can watch the guys on TNT.  Can you imagine how much more fun it'll be with adding Shaw to the lineup with Kenny, Charles, Ernie, and Webber?  Look for the Big Broadcaster to join the TNT team when the lockout ends.

NFL:

A guess this is really a bad time for all athletes, Hines Ward was cited for a DUI, which prompted Ray Rice and Ryan Clark to start trash talking on Twitter.  July 21st, please get us some football.

Another one of those, let me get my surprise face on, Pacman Jones, actually Adam Jones was arrested for drunken disorderly conduct.  Unless he has a twin brother, this guy should just stay at home.  Check the neck brace, this just can't be true.

Mike Vrabel is retiring to go back and be an assistant at his alma mater, The Ohio State University.  He put in 14 years in the NFL and has some rings to show for it.  He should be a welcome sight at the university with everything going on there.

Plaxico is being rumored to play for every team in the NFL, and we'll see which GM gives him a chance.

DeSean Jackson, please see note above about a mentor.  This was a rampant issue in the NBA this year, so why do NFL players feel they'll get a pass?  And on the radio?

When Peyton Manning says that he's hurting and needs the Colts training staff, you know the end of the lockout is near.

That's it for now,....what else is going on?

NFL 2010 Super Bowl Wrap Up

Well, I was partially right, but the Green Packers are your Super Bowl XLV Champions.  This was a great game with two great teams and it came down to a 4th and 5 for the Steelers to have a chance to win the game.

The Packers jumped out early on the Steelers to go up 14-0, and in my opinion (yes, I said this to everyone at the Super Bowl party) it was over then.  The Steelers looked lethargic and almost like they knew they were going to win this game by showing up.  They were able to get hits on Aaron Rodgers, but he never flinched and sat back and kept throwing the ball.  Even with the loss of Driver the Packers wideouts seemed to stay open.  A few more catches by Nelson and the final score could have been a little wider.

This was truly a great year for the Packers and it showed that they have their organization going in the right way.  The real question is what's going to happen to this team when they get back all of the injured guys that they had this year.  They are definitely going to be dangerous next year too.

I do have some questions about the game, just from my viewpoint:

1) If you're the Steelers, why wasn't Hines Ward more involved in the game plan, or even Heath Miller for that matter.  I mean these are two of your best pass catchers and on the 4th and 5, you don't even target either one of them (Miller looked open)?

2) Why all of the Favre talk?  Rodgers did his thing in carrying his team to the Super Bowl and winning and getting an MVP (Favre hasn't won't a Super Bowl MVP, right?), why not just leave it at that?  Yes, Rodgers is good and yes even I doubted his ability to handle this team, but Favre is FAVRE.  No one will break his streak of consecutive starts and only a handful of his QB numbers will be broken (Peyton Manning still has some time).  Favre will (as Cris Carter said last night) go in the NFL HOF and the Packers HOF.  Right now, Rodgers will probably go into the Packers HOF.  That's the difference people, that's the difference.

3) For those that can't appreciate what Woodson has done for the Packers, please go and look at game film.  He is the most complete corner in the game.  Yes, I said it, write it down take a picture.  He still has the ball hawking skills needed to defend passes, but he also can come up and tackle on running plays or on the blitz.  A lot has been said about Revis, Asomugha, and others but please remember that old Ric Flair saying,...'To be the man, you got to beat the man', and Woodson is that man.

Congrats to the Packers for winning the Championship ring and the belt.

NFL 2010 AFC Championship Game Pick

Now that we have that NFC Championship Game Pick out of the way, let's get to the next game.

New York Jets @ Pittsburgh - People are talking about how these two teams are somewhat identical, but I have to kindly disagree.  The Steelers come into this game a little banged up (Polamalu and some of the offensive lineman) but basically in pretty good shape.  Big Ben is on his game and that gives the Steelers the option of running or passing against you.  I am a little concerned with the injuries to the O-line during the Ravens game, but they should be ok.  Mendenhall will get lots of carries and we'll see how good the corners from the Jets really are as they battle (literally) Hines Ward.  The more quick passes to give their receivers some space to run will loosen up that Jets defense and keep them guessing.  Look for big games from Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth (in those double tight-end sets).  On defense the Steelers will have their hands full with the resurgence of Shonn Greene and 'The Closer' in LT.  Polamalu has to play in this game to take away anything in the middle of the field.  I'm looking for Brett Keisel and James Harrison to be in Sanchez's back pocket.  Nothing that much different from the regular season.  If the Steelers get up on the Jets, they will definitely close them out, Mike Tomlin will accept nothing less.  I wonder what he said to them at half time of the Ravens game.

The Jets come in as quiet as church mice this week, an extreme turnaround from the bravado prior to the Patriots game last week.  Not sure if this really fits them.  The Jets played a knock out drag'em game concentrating on the run last week, which is probably the best thing for them.  Shonn Greene has become that power runner that the Jets need (and even had a little bit of speed), who also doesn't fumble the ball.  LT comes in as a change of pace, but is dangerous as ever when given more carries.  Mark Sanchez has struggled a bit with his play, but he has played well enough to actually help his team win.  If he can turn back the page a few weeks, when he was scorching hot and playing extremely well, the Steelers will be in trouble.  On defense the Jets will need to mix it up in an effort to confuse Big Ben.  At times Big Ben holds on to the ball in order to escape a sack or make a big play and if the coverage can confuse him enough to allow the pass rush to get to him, they can create turnovers.  The defensive line will sub often so look for strong play from the vets Jason Taylor and Trevor Price.  Revis and Cromartie (and Eric Smith when the Steelers go 3 or 4 wide) will need to be big for the Jets to win this game.  They are going to have to cover Mike Wallace, Ward, Randle El, and Sanders.

In the end, the Jets are a little more finesse than power on the offensive side of the ball and the Steelers are power on both sides of the ball.  The Jets have played well to get to this point, but I think the dream ends this weekend.  Winner - Steelers.

NFL Wrap Up 10-22-08

New York Jets - As usual more Favre. This story is heating up as the original source of the story, Jay Glazer, is now in a heated back and forth between the World Wide Leader, ESPN, over the validity of the Brett Favre giving Packers secrets to the Detroit Lions prior to their Week 2 game. You can go to this site to hear Favre's press conference and listen to what he says (you'll need real player to listen). Others have piped in on this story like Charles Woodson, who told the press that if it's true that doing that isn't honorable. He said it's one thing for the Lions to have called him, but an entirely different thing if Brett called the Lions. I would say that ESPN would cover this, but I'm not so sure now. Check out Jay Glazer on FoxSports. Stay tuned.

Baltimore Ravens - Bounty or No Bounty? I'm not talking paper towels here, but maybe a Terrible Towel might do the trick. Fresh off of Hines Ward's hit on rookie linebacker Keith Rivers that ended his season, the Ravens' Terrell Suggs on the 2 Live Stews show where Suggs admits that there is a bounty on Hines Ward. Suggs mentioned that Ward always does a little 'cheap shot', legal but cheap. Ward seems to have a knack for knocking defensive players around a little when they aren't looking. Suggs also mentioned that there was a bounty on Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall prior to their last game with Pittsburgh. All of this sounds like the league will get involved somehow, but the Ravens and Suggs have already backtracked on these comments. The two teams meet again on December 14th. There will be fireworks.

Cleveland Browns - The Browns have suspended Kellen Winslow for 1 game for Conduct Detrimental to the team. Winslow had been in an area hospital for a few days last week for a mysterious illness. Winslow asserts that the team knew why he was in the hospital but told him to keep it quiet because his affliction was a staph infection, which seems to be hitting the Browns hard (6 cases over the last 3 years). This marriage seems set for a divorce probably at season's end due to the back and forth nature of who said what and the fact that the Browns quietly shopped Winslow prior to the trading deadline.

Kansas City Chiefs - Another day or two in the twisting turns of Larry Johnson. It seems the Chiefs are expecting the NFL to suspend the running back based on his interactions at night clubs, but if the NFL won't, it seems the team will. LJ looks to be sat/benched, not suspended, again this week for the Chiefs game against Jets. Note to Herm Edwards: I can be hired to drive LJ around and keep him out of the clubs, call me.

Denver Broncos - Two the Hard Way. Not only did the Broncos lose to the Patriots last Monday, they also lost two players, two brothers. Champ Bailey tore his groin muscle and will be out of the lineup for 4 - 6 weeks. His brother, Boss Bailey is having microfracture surgery and will miss the remainder of the year. That Denver defense was already showing signs of being a sieve, and it just got worse.

Philadelphia Eagles - Shawn Andrews has undergone surgery to repair a problem with his back. I expect Andrews to be put on IR and done for this season. The Eagles will probably move forward with Max-Jean Giles for now.
