The 2010 NFL Pack Your Bag Tour

In my NFL 2010 Week 8 Wrap Up, I talked about the Pack Your Bag Tour and the possibility of it heading to your city for your NFL head coach.  After the last few days of watching and listening to what is the NFL, I’ve come up with a road map of sorts.  If you live in one of these cities, look for the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus to stop by.

Stop #1
Minneapolis, Minnesota – Our first stop will be in the state of 10,000 lakes.  After compromising not only himself but probably his team over the past two years, Brad Childress deserves to be the first member on the ‘Pack Your Bag’ Tour Bus.  We all know about Childress’ pursuit of then retired Brett Favre which was akin to you asking the popular older girl to come to the dance with you, but after she says ‘no’ repeatedly, that’s when you really start going after her.  You offer her money (2 year $25M deal), the date could be on her terms (no training camp), and basically you just go all the way to groveling (picking him up at the airport).  On top of that, once you get what you ask for, you take subtle hits on said girl in the media about her not listening to you and making her own decisions.  To make matters worse, the play calling has been horrendous, especially with the talent that you’ve been able to acquire.  Just an utter fail on Childress’ part and it’s time to let the coach fall on his sword.  Have we mentioned the Randy Moss debacle yet?  You release a guy 4 weeks after you acquire him, after you have given up a 3rd round pick to get him and he could conceivably return to the team that traded him for nothing.  It also looks like you made the decision by yourself as your owner isn’t too happy about getting rid of Moss.  Childress you can sit anywhere you want to on the bus, because you are the first guest.

Stop #2
Washington, D.C. – Good morning Mr. Shanahan.  Yes, I struggled to put him this high as our route could have made several other stops along the way, but after this weekend it’s just time.  This is week 8 of the NFL season and for you to publicly state that you pulled your starting QB, Donovan McNabb on a ‘gut feel’ for Rex Grossman was bad.  Then to make matters worse, you retrace your steps and say publicly that ‘Grossman had a better grasp of the 2-minute drill than McNabb does’.  Even right there, I think that you have given me enough to make sure that you get on the bus, but finally you say that McNabb ‘lacked the cardiovascular endurance it takes to run the two-minute drill’.  That noise that you hear, are the crickets chirping.  You are the head coach of a decent team and you are telling me that you are just finding out that you starting QB isn’t capable of running a 2-minute drill?  Because he’s not in shape?  Where have you been the entire year?  Oh yeah, I forgot, you were making sure that your high priced defensive end, Haynesworth, was being sufficiently embarrassed to the national media.  I guess you get a pass for that?  Let me just provide you with some kind of advice for the future:  Rex Grossman should not be put in the game for McNabb unless McNabb is unconscious, literally broken in half, or dead.  In each of those situations, you should probably call a timeout and see if you can get McNabb in the game before you insert Grossman.  You also might want to fire your son who can’t seem to call plays for a college team.  Needless to say, the tenor of your comments about McNabb make you are second guest on the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus, welcome.

Stop #3
Cincinnati, Ohio – And here we thought Ohio was all about LeBron.  Marvin Lewis, it’s been some time coming.  We sent you a ticket for the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus, but last year you seemed to not want to go for a ride with your teams’ performance.  This year it seems as though, you’re right back where we started.  I’ll admit that you’ve taken on your fair share of reclamation projects, with Adam Jones being the most recent and that’s commendable.  But, your team is struggling and it seems as though you only pick up people named Palmer to play QB, which is fine if one of them is actually playing well.  I really don’t have the time to go back over several to document all of the issues this team has had since you came on board, and I think you know this time has been coming.  (Door Opens) Just get on the bus, don’t make me wait.

Stop #4
Arlington, Texas – Wade, how’s it going?  Not so well, huh?  You guys can’t run the ball, Tony Romo might be out all year, and your defense can’t seem to stop anyone?  Yeah, that does sound bad.  What can you do to get this team motivated?  ‘If I knew what the problem was, I would have already done something to change it’.  Not only is that a true and honest statement but a very damaging one too.  Wade has had an All-Star team worth of talent on both sides of the ball, but I think that his style just doesn’t work for this team.  I don’t think that the team is really taking him seriously and based on their last game against the Jaguars, I think this team is planning vacations already.  For some reason the Cowboys are holding out hope that Romo can come back before the end of the year (thus not putting him on IR just yet), but we know it’s over, right?  If there was a concern for those in Dallas, unless you’re a Mavericks fan (sorry to the Rangers also), there’s nothing to really root for in the Dallas area.  (Please also note that the NBA season has just begun, so I imagine that the Mavs will be done shortly before spring).  Jerry Jones first said that your job was not in question, and then he did research to see how teams fared by changing coaches in the middle of a season.  Wade, the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus is right out front.  Let’s not make Jerry do this publically.  If you’re upset, you can sit in the back until you calm down.  We still have two more stops to make.

Stop #5
San Diego, California – Go Chargers Go!!!!!  Actually that should be go Norv go.  I hear that there might be an opening back in Dallas, probably the site of your best work.  Let’s just face the facts, you were a good/great offensive coordinator when you had Troy, Irvin, and Smith, but they are long gone.  You had LT (in his prime), Rivers, Gates, Merriman, V. Jackson, and a host of other talent but for some reason you can’t seem to get them motivated to perform.  Yes, part of that should be the player themselves, but each of your teams have had lackluster starts each season and you can’t keep wasting this type of talent.  Add to this that once you get to the playoffs (if you get there), the play calling becomes horrendous, or maybe it’s always that way but there are other games to watch so we can’t really pay that close attention.  Either way, this has also been sometime coming.  The bus will be here shortly, just make sure your bag is packed.  (Is that a man purse?).  You can have another bag if you need it, but just get on the bus.  (Interesting note:  Norv has actually worked in 3 of our stops on the Pack Your Bag Tour:  Dallas, Washington, and San Diego.)

Stop #6
Chicago, Illinois – The Pack Your Bag Tour Bus has just pulled up to Soldier Field.  It’s only Tuesday but we know that the Bears have enjoyed their bye week and they are presently preparing to head to Buffalo for their game this weekend.  The plan for right now is to just wait in the parking lot and see how Lovie does this week against the Bills.  There have been emails and postcards requesting that we pick Lovie up on the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus (even I have recommended this happen), but since we have 5 people on the bus right now, we’re going to give Lovie a reprieve until the Bills game is over.  Wade Phillips is laying down across a seat so he is keeping a seat warm for Lovie.

Ok, should the Pack Your Bag Tour Bus come to your city?  If so, why?  Let us know and we will schedule a trip to your city.

NFL 2010 Week 8 Wrap Up

How about we just forget this week in its entirety?  I mean, I know it’s going to be bad and there’s no need for me to show you how bad it really is.  But I am really starting to rethink this whole pick making thing.  This is really sad.

Miami @ Cincinnati – We can already start the ‘Pack Your Bags’ Tour with our first game.  The Bungles (yes, we’re back to calling them this) were horrendous.  Carson Palmer looked like the Joker out there (please tell me you saw Shannon Sharpe pre-game on CBS) and other than the two passes for TDs to TO (one was pure luck), they didn’t do anything.  Palmer (17 of 38 for 156 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) was outplayed by Chad Henne (24 of 37 for 217 yards, 1 INT).  Let that sit with you for a second.  Marvin Lewis, Pack Your Bags.  Inquisitive Mind 0 -1 for the week.

Jacksonville @ Dallas – The ‘Pack Your Bags’ Tour now heads to Dallas.  You mean to tell me that you get a Jaguars team that has been bad for the majority of the year, a home game, and you come out and play like this?  Yes, Jon Kitna ended the game with 4 INTs, but I think only 1 can the blame be laid at his feet.  The rest of the Cowboys looked listless and the most telling stat of this game is as follows:  D. Garrard – 17 of 21 for 260 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs, and a QB Rating of 157.8.  I don’t even think that you can do that on Madden.  He was 12 for 12 at one point and he looked like Peyton Manning.  I wasn’t sure that he was going to miss.  Again, Dallas can’t run the ball, and they had only 17 carries by RBs yesterday (5 carries by Kitna).  If you didn’t see the post game by Wade Phillips, it just totally underlines the fact that, Wade Phillips should, Pack Your Bags.  Jerry can’t keep taking it on the chin like this, as he actually apologized to the Cowboys fans.  My quote - ‘IF they lose to this Jaguars team, they shouldn’t even show up for the rest of the year’. Inquisitive Mind 0 -2 for the week.

Washington @ Detroit – Ok, let’s get this out of the way.  Matthew Stafford looked good, going 26 of 45 for 212, with 4 TDs, and 1 INT.  Ndamukong Suh basically sealed up the Rookie Defensive Player of the Year IMHO.  But let’s get to the meat of this game.  You are going to tell me that you pulled Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman?  Because Rex had a better grasp of the 2-minute offense than Donovan?!?!?  There is nowhere outside of Grossman’s mother’s house that anyone should even THINK that.  I mean this is borderline sacrilegious.  Donovan was, of course, his PC self during the post game press conference, but you have to be wondering what he really wanted to say,….’you pulled me for #*$(ing Rex Grossman?  This ain’t Florida?  This is the NFL.  Are #*$(ing serious?’  I’m with you Donovan, I’m with you.  Next week the ‘Pack Your Bags’ tour might be headed to DC.  Inquisitive Mind 0 -3 for the week.

Buffalo @ Kansas City – Although it took almost a game and a half, the Chiefs found a way to beat the Bills.  It hurts me to even say that because the Bills suck, but they played with a LOT of heart yesterday.  Jamaal Charles had 177 yards on 22 carries and the chiefs had some luck on a missed field goal by Ryan Lindell.  Finally a win this week for me!!! Inquisitive Mind 1 – 3 for the week.

Green Bay @ New York Jets – You have a bye week, you’re rested and then you host a beaten up Packers team and you can’t even get a TD?!?!?  I actually almost threw something at the TV because of this game.  4th and 18 and you go for a fake punt?  And then after the game you say that the punter is able to make that call himself when he wants to.  Are you kidding me??!?!?  Then we wonder why the shelf life of coaches seems to be getting shorter and shorter? Inquisitive Mind 1 – 4 for the week.

Denver @ San Francisco – This is the first time that I can actually say that I’m proud of the 49ers.  They toughed out a win and Troy Smith looked like he should have been starting all year long.  Maybe it was the trip to London, I’m not sure.  Let’s see if the coaches can get this right and start Smith the rest of the year. Of course, 29 carries by Frank Gore helps any QB.  Interesting fact:  Kyle Orton has thrown for over 300 yards a game 5 out of the 8 he has played this year.  Of those 3 he didn’t, he threw for 295 in one of them.  Inquisitive Mind 2 – 4 for the week.

Tennessee @ San Diego – Well, Vince played this week and he got hurt again.  Trot out Kerry Collins and that equals a loss to the struggling Chargers. The Chargers usually don’t get going until the second half of games and it almost cost them again.  I can’t root for this Chargers team because of the dysfunction, but they were able to stop the normally unstoppable Chris Johnson (59 yards).  Philip Rivers had a great game with 305 yards, 2 TDS, and 1 INT and with all that’s been said and done, the Chargers are sitting at 3 and 5 midway through the season.  At least they still have a chance to make some noise, but we’ll have to see.  I still say, Norv Turner, Pack Your Bags.  A team with this much talent shouldn’t be barely winning games. Inquisitive Mind 2 – 5 for the week.

Tampa Bay @ Arizona – LeGarrette Blount showed up and led the Bucs on the ground with a 22 carry, 120 yard, 2 TD performance.  He will definitely be starting for the next few games for the Bucs as they figure out who can consistently run the ball for them.  Add to that Josh Freeman is becoming the QB that some thought he could be.  He looked good yesterday leading that Buc team.  They may have found their QB of the future.  Inquisitive Mind 3 – 5 for the week.

Minnesota @ New England – Favre got the start, Favre got hit, Favre left the game, Jackson played well.  How about we cut out the beginning of all of that and let Jackson start?  I know that Favre is your guy and I’m a Favre guy, but let Jackson start and play.  He can manage this team for a week or so while you let the old man get healthy because we know IF the Vikings make the playoffs (that’s a big IF right now), you’re going to want a healthy and rested Favre unless Jackson is just playing lights out.  The Patriots lucked out in this one.  If I’m Randy Moss, I would miss being in New England also.  The Vikings have terrible play calling and game management.  Brad Childress, you have been compromised, so please please please Pack Your Bags now.  Inquisitive Mind 3 – 6 for the week.

Seattle @ Oakland – Michael Bush (9 carries 51 yards, 1 TD) and Darren McFadden (21 carries, 111 yards) proved which team had the better stable of running backs while Jason Campbell (310 yards and 2 TDs) played well two times in a row (gasp).  The Raiders looked like the team that I thought they could be.  The Raiders defense was all over Hasselbeck and I’m surprised that he’s even upright today.  The only bad in this game is that the Raiders lost Nnamdi Asomugha to an ankle injury.  Inquisitive Mind 4 – 6 for the week.

Pittsburgh @ New Orleans – Timely interceptions from the Saints sealed this game.  The Steelers seemed to be off a little on offense and then their defense had several memory lapses that allowed Drew Brees just a hint of freedom.  Brees ended with 305 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT, but he was bottled up the majority of the game as the Steelers held the Saints to 30 yards rushing for the game.  Inquisitive Mind 4 – 7 for the week.

Houston @ Indianapolis – That’s what I get for going against the grain.  The Colts got out early on the Texans and that was it.  The Texans had problems protecting Matt Schaub last night and the Colts were able to trot out anyone with a pulse to catch a ball.  I guess that’s what differentiates the good teams from the decent teams.  The Colts are in first and that’s all that matters.  I think Dwight Freeney is still finding ways to hit Schaub as I type.  Inquisitive Mind 4 – 8 for the week.

Well, not only was this a terrible week, but I missed a game.  The Panthers played the Rams and it’s easy to say now that I would have picked the Rams, but either way I missed that game.  (Malik, think of it this way, you didn’t have a chance to be mad at me for picking against your beloved Panthers).  So, with a 4 and 8 week, that brings me to 63 – 53 for the season and I can honestly say that it’s going to be hard to get back into this race.  Wish me luck.

Moss Gone

WOW!!!  Talk about shocking.  The Vikings have released Randy Moss a day after he made several statements to the media after the 28-18 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.  Here’s an excerpt:

"Let me hold it down. Alright. I really haven't had a chance to talk to the guys, so this is no disrespect to the Minnesota Vikings and their organization. The captains, Wilfolk, Tommy Boy, Mayo, Kevin Faulk, man I miss them guys, man, I miss the team. It was hard for me to come here and play. It's been an up and down roller coaster emotionally for me all week. And then to be able to come in here and see those guys, running plays and I know what they're doing, and the success they had on the field, the running game, so I kind of know what type of feeling they have on their locker room, man. I just want to be able to tell the guys, I miss the hell out of them, every last helmet in that locker room.”

Adoration for former team, check.  He kept on going though.

"Like I said, it's been an emotional roller coaster all week. Tried to prepare, tried to talk to the players and coaches about how this game was going to be played, couple tendencies here and a couple tendencies here. The bad part about it, is you have six days to prepare for a team, and on the seventh day, that Sunday, meaning today, I guess they come over and say, 'Dag Moss, I guess you was right about a couple plays and a couple schemes they were going to run.' And it hurts as a player, that you put a lot of hard work in during the week, and at the end of the week, Sunday, when you get on the field, that's when they acknowledge about the hard work that you put in throughout the week. That's actually a disappointment”.

Ok, he was hurt that his present team didn’t listen to him about tendencies and schemes that the Patriots exhibit during games, check.  And more,….

"There is a lot of film study that we leave in that room each day. I know how hard these guys work in New England and the only thing that I really tried to do was take what the best coach in football history has brought upon me, or the knowledge that he's given me about the game of football, and I tried to sprinkle it off to the guys the best way I know how. So I'm going to go ahead and end this interview, I have my family to see”.

Ok.  What is the problem here?  How do you just let this guy go?  Again, I’m calling for the Pack Your Bags Tour to come to team in Minessota and get Brad Childress.  Childress has mismanaged this team blatantly enough to warrant his dismissal.  What else does he have to do?  Trade AP?  When will Zigi make this decision to let go of Childress?

What’s your take?  Did Moss cross the line with his comments?  Should he have been let go?  If you were a team, would you pick up Moss now?  Is this the end for him?

Next Batter Up

The Vikings have pulled the trigger and have given the reins of the team over to a new QB. With Tarvaris Jackson struggling and the Vikings feeling like this is their year, Gus Frerotte is now the man. Add to this the 0-2 start and many felt like Childress' job was on the line, so something had to happen. Frerotte is an upgrade over Jackson when it comes to drop back passing, but I think that this only makes the team marginally better. Yes, adding Favre to this team would have been nothing short of a coup and rocketed the Vikes to elite status, but it wasn't meant to be. You have to think that Chris Simms could have been a decent upgrade, even over Frerotte. So, the Vikings head into week 3, hoping to turn it around (sounds like my fantasy team). Let's see how this move goes.
