NBA Finals - Recap

The dust has now settled.  The Dallas Mavericks are the NBA Champions and Dirk Nowitzki has claimed the Finals MVP.  Let's take a look at some of the things that happened and let's start taking a look at the future.

1) The Mavericks did what not many thought they could do and that was win against this Heat team.  They got scoring from Dirk and Jet and then the 'other' pieces started falling into place: Stevenson (scoring, defense), Chandler (rebounding), Kidd (leadership), Marion (scoring, defense) and the rest of the bench provided the intangibles.  They proved that a team (with one superstar) can beat anyone.  The Mavs looked like the better coached team and thus the outcome.  Conspiracy Theory Alert - How many free throws can a guy get who isn't a slasher?  I mean this has got to be a record for the most free throws attempted by any one player in this many playoff games.  Dirk had how many for the series?  Over 170 and I'm still looking for the concrete information.

2) LeBron, let me count the ways.  LBJ is probably the most talented person in the NBA.  Along with others, it's going to take time for him to put it all together.  The first thing he should work on is his attitude.  This is the last stanza of the poem 'IF' by Rudyard Kipling:

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

LBJ has lost that common touch.  For him to answer questions like he did in the post game presser is unconscionable.  He is never going to endear himself to anyone and he should've taken the high road and just said 'I sucked, I will get better, and we will be back next year'.  He probably wouldn't have gotten another question because everyone's mouth would have been open.

3) Next up for LBJ is his game.  I don't think that LBJ 'checked out' as many have said.  I think he was really at his wits end.  It's that place where he realized that he couldn't do what he wanted to do because his game isn't at that level.  LBJ has succeeded (and yes he's succeeded, got better numbers than Kobe in the playoffs after same number of years) by doing what he always did, outrunning people and just being bigger.  In the NBA, there are guys that are his size and can run.  IF, and that's a big one, LBJ gets a back to the basket game and a mid range game (why do you think Jordan worked on this later in his career?) he will be ______ (enter any Scottie Pippen comment you want to use).  The article from ESPN based on a interview with Steve Kerr says it all (a brief snippet is here):

"Michael had three years at North Carolina with Dean Smith. That makes a big difference," Kerr said. "I think he was brought up at a time when there was probably better development at a young age in terms of coaching. I think LeBron is a product of the AAU system where you rely on your athleticism, you go and play 100 games a year but maybe you don't focus on your weaknesses and what you need to lock in on.
"As a result, fundamentally and technically LeBron has some flaws. He has to address those. If I were him I would spend all summer down on the low block shooting jump hooks and turnaround jump shots -- the entire summer." - Whole story here.

4) Classy.  Not normally the word that I've used when talking about Mark Cuban, the owner of the Mavs, but he sure did it the right way with the trophy acceptance and he's been quiet in the media.  Maybe all those years of paying fines caught up to him or he was able to find his groove.  Great job Mr. Cuban.

5) Jilted.  Why is Dan Gilbert still tweeting about LBJ?  Are you still heart-broken, are you still a scorned lover?  Let it go.  He's gone.  If he's as bad as you said he is, you should be happy.  You coddled him, gave him all the freedom that you should with someone nicknamed 'The Chosen One' and it came back to bite you.  Enjoy the draft and figure out what to do with the 1st and 4th pick.  Stay off of Twitter.  Even your congrats to the Mavs had to mention LBJ.

6) DeShawn Stevenson.  How do I put this,....hmmmmm.  Shut up.  You are lucky to be a NBA Champion and you continue to talk.  Let's not forget that you're most famous for doing what?  Chasing Bird Man for the NBA player with the most tattoos?  Yes, you hit some shots to help the Mavs win, but you are probably just happy that you were included in a trade that brought you to Dallas.  Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame.

7) Dwayne Wade.  You are lucky because your failings are forgiven because you've won a championship before and the fact that LBJ has provided a much easier target for everyone.  You got some work to do too.
So, what was your take on the series?

Straight Cash Homey

The New Orleans Hornets and the Sacramento Kings agree to a trade and it's all about cash.

New Orleans Hornets
Get: Carl Landry

Sacramento Kings
Get: Marcus Thornton and (straight) cash

My take on the Hornets: The Hornets need more bench punch and they got it with Landry.  They had to give up Thornton who played well last year, but for some reason was riding the pine this year.  Add to that, the cash, got it done.  One of the Hornets owners was pissed about this deal because the Hornets brought in $2M in salary and they are already losing money.

My take on the Kings: C.R.E.A.M.  This was about getting rid of Landry's contract and taking back Thornton (who may play) and more cash.  The Kings need a decent guy to back up their SG spot, so maybe he'll get some run.

Martha Stewart Part II

Is it worth it? The Securities and Exchange commission is going after Mark Cuban for some illegal insider trading. Supposedly Cuban sold all of his shares of Mamma.com (Inc) after using some non-public information that he received from the company. None of this makes sense to me, but for all of you legal eagles, here's the information. Thanks to ESPN for the story.

NBA Round Up 9-30-08

Cleveland Cavaliers - Why is everyone talking about LBJ leaving Cleveland? Or at least something like that. LeBron addresses this question with the 'I love playing for Cleveland', 'I grew up 30 miles away', 'My family is here', blah blah blah. Why don't people just leave this issue alone? If some other teams offers LBJ mucho dinero to leave Cleveland and the team has a better chance of winning, why not take the money and the opportunity? No matter if he loves Cleveland or NYC, if someone in Europe offers him $50M (net) a year, odds are that LBJ would be doing a bid in Europe.

Dallas Mavericks - Mark Cuban, while professing his love and adoration for Avery Johnson discussed his reason behind firing Johnson. Supposedly, a lot of players were coming to him letting him know that they would want to be traded instead of playing for Johnson another year. Enough of them voiced the same concern to Cuban and so Cuban took the easy exit off the expressway, he fired Johnson. Talk about the inmates running the asylum. Cuban should have told them to suck it up and play ball.

Milwaukee Bucks - For Sale - short, defense lacking, friend of LeBron, point guard, with an over the top persona, and the matching suits to go with it, is yours for the highest bid. Well, maybe two happy meals with the special edition Batman toys and we can get a deal done. Damon Jones and the Bucks have mutually agreed that Jones shouldn't report to camp. He can be yours if the price is right.

Miami Heat - Kevin McHale is now assisting with running 3 teams (the Wolves, the Celtics, and now presumably the Heat). McHale informed everyone that Shaun Livingston has decided not to sign with the Timberwolves, but will accept an offer from the Miami Heat. This is all news to the Heat who haven't said anything concerning Livingston. I mean they are dealing with Randy Pfund leaving and Pat Riley adding yet another responsibility to his already full plate.

Houston Rockets - This is supposed to be a good time in Houston. They have their team back, they have a Tru Warrier, and everyone was supposedly healthy after many off season surgeries. Well, Battier is out a month with a hurt foot, and now Tracy McGrady is saying that his knee is about 80%, but that his shoulder will need another surgery after the season because he has arthritis in the shoulder. Each year Houston has health issues, maybe someone put a root on the city of Houston, or at least their basketball team.

Detroit Pistons - Have we seen the last of Lindsey Hunter? The Pistons signed Alex Acker to their roster on a partially guaranteed contract, which could mean that Hunter won't be back for his 16th season in the NBA. We'll keep a watch on this one, because there are a lot of teams that could use a defensive point guard who can shoot when it comes playoff time.

Open Mouth Insert Foot

Now, I've talked about this brother in previous rants, but now he's at it again. My question of the day is why can't Josh Howard just go somewhere and be quiet for like 6 months? I know Mark Cuban is cringing right now. He paid this guy and has openly supported him through the weed comment and the racing, but we'll see what he does after this one gets traffic. I thought about putting this in the Stupid Athlete Tricks, but I held off. I'm giving him a pass on this one, since he's from NC (this is no way means I support the silly stuff you're going to hear out of his mouth). This is a video from Allen Iverson's Celebrity Football Game. Go to the 1:40 mark to start.
